REISTERSTOWN, Md. – February 15, 2022 – The Chatham men's hockey team fought tooth and nail on the road against Stevenson, tying the game with just five seconds remaining in the third period, but could not execute in the overtime period as the Cougars fell 3-2 to the Stevenson Mustangs.
Stevenson scored the first two goals of the game, one in each period. Things looked bleak early on as the Cougars were outshot 16-9 in the first, but they closed the gap to 11-10 in the second. After the Mustangs were given a bench minor, Chatham cashed in during the waning seconds of the power play after senior captain
Michael Lamison scored the first goal after getting assists by junior
Kenneth Gill and first-year
Zack Conner.
In the third period, senior goalie
Ricardo Gonzalez played stellar defense, stopping all 15 shots fired his way. While Chatham got off just three shots in the third period, the equalizer came in the final seconds of regulation. Chatham pulled Gonzalez to put an extra attacker on ice, Conner found Lamison, and Lamison pulled the trigger to send the game to overtime.
The highest of highs was followed by a Stevenson goal halfway through the overtime period, putting an end to the Cougars' comeback hopes. Despite losing in overtime, Chatham gets a much-needed point in the UCHC standings. It holds a two-point lead over Manhattanville for the final home playoff spot.
