Chatham Falls to No. 9 Wilkes in Penultimate Regular Season Game

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – February 18, 2022 – The Chatham University men's hockey team fell to the ninth-ranked team in the country Wilkes 6-3 on the road on Friday evening, dropping the Cougars' record to 8-12-2 overall and 7-8-2 in UCHC play.

The game did not start the way the Cougars intended, falling behind 4-0 before Chatham could slice the Colonel lead in half. Right around halfway through the second period, sophomores Liam Murphy and JJ Fecteau connected with junior captain Lucas Rothe for the Cougars' first goal. Chatham added one more when Murphy scored an unassisted tally late in the second.

Wilkes went on to add two more scores to balloon its lead to 6-2. The final goal of the game came off the stick of junior Matt Mood, who got an assist from classmate Tristan Hillebert to make the score final at 6-3.

Despite the loss, Chatham outshot Wilkes 41-33 for the game and were more disciplined by committing one fewer penalty than the hosts. Senior Ricardo Gonzalez surrendered four goals in the first 21:31 before first-year Thomson Phinney finished the final 38:29, making 18 saves.

Chatham returns to the ice tomorrow night at King's with playoff seeding implications on the line in the final regular season game of the year. Puck drops at 4:00.
