PITTSBURGH, Pa. – February 12, 2022 – The Chatham men's basketball team bounced back in a big way Saturday afternoon at home with an 83-51 thumping of Bethany. The win puts Chatham at 18-2 overall and 13-2 in the PAC, maintaining the Cougars' grasp of first in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Despite missing two of their most prolific scorers, Chatham had little issue taking care of the Bison. The Cougars jumped out to a 14-1 lead and never looked back. Bethany cut the lead to single digits on a few occasions, but still could not get any closer in the first half as Chatham maintained a 35-24 halftime lead.
In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Chatham came out blazing hot. The Cougars scored 32 points in those first 10 minutes of the second half, building a mammoth lead thanks to timely shooting. Chatham at one point was shooting 69% from the floor in the second half, leading to the 33-point win, the fifth largest in Cougar history.
For the game, Chatham shot an impressive 46.9% from the floor and buried 15 threes on 40 attempts, two shy of the single game record for three-point attempts. The Cougars were also two rebounds short of the single game rebounding record at 47 for the game.
11 different Cougars tallied at least one point, with junior
Brandon Lavernia leading the way with 17 points on 5-6 from three and 6-8 from the field. Classmate
Marcos Cintron followed closely behind with 15 points and two steals, and sophomore
Simon Boyer scored 10 points with five assists. Senior
Nick Fiumara had a team-high eight rebounds as well.
The Cougars now prepare for the final week of the regular season, which begins on Valentine's Day with a 7:30 tip against Franciscan at home.
