PITTSBURGH, Pa. – May 6, 2021 – The Chatham University baseball team fell behind early against the visiting Waynesburg Yellow Jackets and dropped a 7-2 decision. Chatham's record falls to 9-22 overall and 8-16 in PAC play.
Waynesburg wasted little time getting on the board. The first two batters reached base thanks to a double in the leadoff spot and then an RBI triple by the second hitter in the lineup. From the second run all the way until near the end of the game, all of Waynesburg's runs came courtesy of groundouts.
The Cougars were set down in order through the first time around the lineup. Despite getting two base runners on, the ensuing batters grounded into double plays. Chatham's first hit was smacked in the fourth inning off of a triple by junior
Caleb Lehman.
With the score reading 5-0 in the seventh inning, Chatham finally broke through. Lehman led off with a double, took third on a stolen base, and later scored courtesy of a pinch-hit RBI single by first-year
Dylan Vogel. Senior
Logan Kasper also came home thanks to a fielder's choice and throwing error by the Yellow Jacket skipper.
Waynesburg put an end to any chance Chatham may have had in the top of the eighth after a double and RBI triple put the Yellow Jackets up 7-2. The final run was scored off of yet another groundout.
Chatham struggled to register hits, only getting five all game compared to Waynesburg's 11. However, the Cougars stranded eight Yellow Jackets on base. Lehman was the only Cougar to record multiple base hits. The others were by Kasper, Vogel, first-year
Justin Marshall and sophomore
Brandon Griener.
Starting and taking the loss was senior
Ryan Shawley after going 3.2 innings and allowing the first four runs. Junior
Erik Napolitano went 4.1 innings and struck out a pair of Waynesburg batters. Pitching the final three outs was junior
Trevor Salvior.
Chatham prepares for the final series of the regular season tomorrow, May 7 at Westminster in another double header. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m. in New Wilmington.
