NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – May 7, 2021 – The Chatham University baseball team split a road double header at Westminster College, winning game one 8-2 and dropping game two 11-7. The win gives Chatham double digit wins for the first time in the program's history.
Chatham scored the first eight runs of the game in the first half of the twin bill. The first two came off the bat of junior
Mason Akers in the second, singling in a pair of runs. The next five came in the fourth inning thanks to RBI base knocks by sophomore
Brandon Griener and junior
Caleb Lehman. The latter of the two scored on an error by Westminster, joining senior
Logan Kasper on the scoring play.
Chatham finished its scoring in the seventh after sophomore
Lucas Rothe roped a SAC fly to straightaway, allowing the eighth run to tag from third. Westminster averted the shutout in the bottom of the inning but at that point Chatham had already secured the sizable win.
The Cougars connected on a dozen base hits, four of which came in a 4/4 performance by Lehman. Kasper and first-year
Frankie DeLuca also smacked a pair of hits. Senior
Austin Andonisio went the distance for his fifth win of the season, striking out a lucky seven.
Game two started with more of the same, as senior
Ryan Shawley singled to center to put Chatham on the board first. Westminster tied it in the bottom of the second, but Chatham regained control after Lehman drilled a triple to right.
This would be the last time the Cougars held the lead in game two, as Westminster scored three in the bottom of the third and only grew that lead in the fifth after six runs came across. The score read 11-3 after junior
Nico Cuello hit an RBI single.
With the score seemingly out of reach, Chatham mounted a comeback in the eighth and ninth innings. Rothe connected again on an RBI single in the eighth making the score 11-4. Lehman later reached on a throwing error in the ninth which scored graduate
Justin Silvious. Senior
Jonathan Scarsella scored on a wild pitch and Shawley hit a SAC fly, making the score 11-7. After Rothe got on after a two out single, he was caught stealing second to end the game.
Game two was an onslaught of hits between both teams, Chatham hitting 13 and Westminster connecting on 16. The most productive Cougar was Cuello, who went 4/5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
First-year
Dominic Costellic took the loss after starting the first four innings and striking out a quartet. He was relieved by sophomore
Cole Couchman, first-year
Mason Schwartz and junior
Kelli Jenkins.
