PITTSBURGH, Pa. - April 26, 2021 - Chatham Softball hosted Thiel this evening in a conference doubleheader. Despite trailing by two runs in the first game, the Cougars came back to win both games 6-2 and 6-0 respectively.
The Cougars started their scoring affair in the third inning of game one, beginning with a single to center from graduate outfielder Paige Shaftic. Caitlin Worwood would keep the Chatham bats going with a single to advance Shaftic, followed by a triple by Mackenzie Dunn that would score Shaftic.
The bottom of the fourth would prove to be Chatham's best offensive inning. Graduate infielder Lauren McNany was first up, doubling to left center. She would score a run soon after when Julie Swedberg hit a triple down the right field line, advancing home on a throw to third gone awry. Shaftic got on base once again with a slap, driving in a walked Lindsay Hans.
Chatham put the finishing touches on the game in their last at-bat in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a double from Mackenzie Dunn that scored Shaftic and Hans.
Julie Swedberg secured the win in the circle for the Cougars, allowing just two runs with two strikeouts and zero walks.
Chatham dominated game two from the start on both fronts. Kayla Gee started the first inning with three straight strikeouts, followed by the second batter Mackenzie Dunn ripping a two-run homer over the left center fence.
In the second inning, first-year Savanna Ahlborn and sophomore Alyssa Hoffman got the Cougars started with a pair of singles. Shaftic would have yet another RBI in the works thanks to a sacrifice bunt that would score Hoffman.
For Chatham's fourth run, a walked Mackenzie Dunn would make the most of her speed, first stealing second and then advancing to third on a fly out before taking home on a passed ball.
To finish off the Tomcats, the Cougars would score one run in each of their last two offensive inning. Lauren Haak would drive in Caitlin Worwood in the sixth, and Isabella Siren would get her first RBI with a run for Ahlborn.
Kayla Gee earned her seventh win of the season, striking out 10 Tomcats.
With the wins, the Cougars improve to 10-16 overall, 5-7 in the PAC. The Cougars have a full week ahead of them with doubleheaders against Grove City, Franciscan, and Westminster all with conference points on the line.
