PITTSBURGH, Pa. - April 28, 2021 - Chatham hosted Grove City today in a PAC doubleheader. The Cougars were able to hold onto a late lead in game one, but Grove City was able to do the same in game two.
Game one was a defensive battle throughout, especially for Chatham who only had two hits as opposed to Grove City's seven.
It would take until the sixth inning for the Cougars to score. Leadoff batter Paige Shaftic was able to reach on a slap and was quickly advanced to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt laid down by senior Caitlin Worwood. Shaftic successfully showcased her speed with a third base steal just before sophomore Lauren Haak was up to bat. Haak hit a gap shot to the right side, scoring Shaftic.
Haak's RBI would prove to be enough as pitchers Julie Swedberg and Kayla Gee would shut down the Wolverine offense in the top of the seventh and end the game.
Game two began in the same fashion with seven scoreless innings. West Field saw some crucial defensive plays from the Cougars that prevented the Wolverines from getting on base.
Grove City got their opportunity in the eight inning, driving in two runs. The Cougars would unfortunately not be able to catch up, and the Wolverines would force a series split.
The Cougars are back in action for another conference doubleheader at Franciscan on Friday, April 30th at 3:30 and 5:30 PM.
