Softball Plays to Second Split with Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. - April 11, 2021 - After an early-season, non-conference split between Chatham and Saint Vincent, the two teams played to yet another one-and-one finish. The Bearcats took the first game home with a 14-6 win and Chatham came back with a 5-1 victory of their own in game two.

The Cougars got off to a strong start in game one, getting up 3-0 in the first inning thanks to RBIs by sophomore Justine Boyle (2) and graduate Lauren McNany.

Saint Vincent woke up their bats in the bottom of the second, batting around their order and bringing in nine runs.

First-year Mackenzie Dunn hit her first career home run to start the third inning, also claiming the sole Cougar run. The Cougars had two more runs in the fourth, brought in by Carly Clark and Dunn.

The game came to a close in the bottom of the fifth when the Bearcats scored three final runs to bring the scoring deficit to eight.

Game two started, and remained, in Chatham's favor. McNany was the first to reach home for the Cougars in the second inning, thanks to a fielder's choice forced by Alyssa Hoffman.

Mackenzie Dunn earned run number two, scoring on a wild pitch in the third.

Heads-up base running earned the Cougars their third run, as first-year Lindsay Hans sacrificed herself to a failed stealing attempt at second, allowing senior Caiti Worwood to steal home.

The final two runs were scored in the top of the seventh. A run from Hans resulting from a wild throw advanced Mackenzie Dunn to third, who then tagged up on a fly-out from sophomore Lauren Haak.

Mackenzie Dunn led the Cougars with six hits, four runs, and two RBIs on the day. Justine Boyle also contributed two RBIs in game one.

Boyle finished the outing with two doubles, Dunn and Haak each hitting one of their own.

In game two, Kayla Gee pitched a complete game for the win, recording ten strikeouts on 30 batters faced.

After a long stretch of away games, the Cougars are finally back at West Field for two home double headers in the coming week. Their first matchup is Washington and Jefferson on Tuesday, April 13th, followed by Thiel on Saturday, April 17th.
