PITTSBURGH, Pa. - April 13, 2021 - Chatham University Softball hosted Washington and Jefferson College tonight in a PAC doubleheader. The two teams split earlier in the season in non-conference play and repeated the series finish this evening. The Presidents took the first game 6-1 before the Cougars rallied back to win game two 1-0.
In game one, the Presidents scored one run in the top of the first inning.
The Cougars were quick to tie the game, coming from a pair of singles up the middle. Graduate Lauren McNany was the first to get on base, followed by first-yearMackenzie Wilder who was walked. First-year Lindsay Hans reached on an error, advancing McNany to third. It would be Paige Shaftic to drive in the Cougars' sole run, finding open space up the middle for a single and scoring McNany.
The Presidents scored four runs in the fourth inning for insurance, not allowing any opportunity for a Cougar comeback. Washington and Jefferson's Alisha Kulka proved to be a challenge for Chatham's offense, limiting them to just five hits.
Game two remained scoreless across three and a half innings until Chatham broke the streak.
Senior Kelsey Benjamin was walked before advancing to third soon after thanks to a left field double from McNany. Sophomore Isabella Siren, pinch running for Benjamin, crossed the plate upon contact by designated player Julie Swedberg.
The game would see two and a half more scoreless innings, resulting in a 1-0 final score in Chatham's favor. Graduate pitcher Kayla Gee held the Cougar defense down, allowing just one hit in the third inning. Gee recorded nine strikeouts in the win.
Five different Cougars tallied one of Chatham's five hits in game two, including singles from Caiti Worwood, Paige Shaftic, and Alyssa Hoffman, as well as a double for both Lauren McNany and Mackenzie Dunn.
The Cougars now stand at 7-13 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Chatham's next series is Saturday, April 17 when they host Thiel at 1 and 3 PM.
