Baseball Splits to Finish Weekend Series with Geneva

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – April 10, 2020 – For the second time in 24 hours, the Chatham and Geneva baseball teams split the day's series with the Cougars triumphing game one 9-2 and the Golden Tornadoes taking game two 14-5. Chatham's record improves to 6-10 with a 4-8 PAC mark.

The tone of game one was set in the second inning. Chatham struck to the tune of three runs, with the first being a passed ball bringing home senior Logan Kasper. First-year Justin Marshall then scored after an error committed in the Geneva outfield, and a fielder's choice brought home senior Ryan Shawley.

Chatham one-upped itself in the next frame with four more runs. First, Kasper doubled to score a pair of Cougars, then scored after an RBI single by Shawley. The inning was capped off with an RBI single by sophomore Luke Paulson, giving Chatham a commanding 7-0 lead after just three innings.

Chatham's final two runs were scored in the fifth inning. First-year Frankie DeLuca reached via another Geneva error which scored Shawley, then DeLuca stole second to allow Paulson to come home. Geneva avoided a shutout in the seventh inning by plating two runs, but by then it was too little too late, as Chatham won the game comfortably 9-2.

Chatham cooked up a baker's dozen base hits and limited Geneva to just six for the game, including four through the first six innings. Kasper and senior Andrew Clark both went 3/4 with Kasper scoring twice with two runs batted in and Clark scoring once. Paulson and Marshall both swiped a pair of base knocks, and Shawley also touched all four bags twice.

Pitching the complete game and getting the win was senior Austin Andonisio, allowing six hits and no earned runs while striking out a pair.

Game two started with both teams trading two spots in the first inning. Clark singled in DeLuca, and later stole second to allow junior Caleb Lehman to take home. After Geneva scored two more in the fourth, Chatham got one back with an RBI single by first-year Corey Miller. Unfortunately, Chatham left two runners stranded and trailed 4-3 after four.

This was the closest Chatham would get in game two. Geneva added three runs in the sixth to make the score 7-3. The Cougars added another run from the strong bat of Kasper, hacking an RBI double to make the score 7-4.

However, things fell apart for Chatham in the eighth inning as Geneva scored seven runs and cracked nine base hits, giving the Golden Tornadoes the comfortable 10-run edge. Clark added a run in the bottom of the ninth after a fielder's choice by junior Sam Greenberg. However, Chatham still fell in game two 14-5.

In game two, Chatham was outhit 20-8, including the nine successful swings in the eighth. Both teams also committed a trifecta of errors. Miller and Clark were the only Cougars to eclipse multiple base hits for game two, with both going 2/5 with an RBI.

Five pitchers toed the rubber for the Cougars in the latter half of the doubleheader. Getting the start was first-year Dominic Costellic, going 3.2 innings and striking out a trio. Classmate Mason Schwartz took the loss in a relief appearance after going 2.0 innings and surrendering three runs. Also pitching for Chatham were first-year Mitchell Thornton, sophomore Cole Couchman, junior Mason Akers and sophomore Eric Paulin.

Chatham's next weekend series takes place with Washington & Jefferson, as the Cougars visit Washington County next Saturday, April 17 with the first game of the double header commencing at 1:00 p.m.
