Cougars Blank Waynesburg in Game One

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – April 13, 2020 – The Chatham baseball team split Tuesday's series at Waynesburg, shutting out the Yellow Jackets in game one 3-0 before falling in game two 11-4. Chatham's record improves to 6-12 on the season and 5-9 in PAC play.

It took two swings for the Cougars to win game one. First, a 2-RBI double by senior Jonathan Scarsella in the second inning gave Chatham an early 2-0 lead. Later in the fifth inning, first-year Corey Miller poked a single to center which gave the Cougars the 3-0 cushion needed to hold off the Yellow Jackets. Chatham outhit Waynesburg 6-4 and was perfect in the field while the Yellow Jackets committed one gaffe.

On the bump, junior Erik Napolitano pitched a complete game, playing pitch to contact to perfection. He allowed just four hits in the 26 batters he faced, forcing 12 fly outs and nine groundouts.

Game two looked like was going to favor the visitors again thanks to another fast start. Senior Andrew Clark singled in the first run of the game and later came to score after first-year Justin Marshall was hit by a pitch. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets stung to the tune of six runs before Chatham would strike back.

With the Cougars down 6-2, first-year Dylan Vogel stole second which permitted junior Nico Cuello to score. Vogel came around to score after Clark picked up his second RBI of game two. With the score at 6-4, Chatham could not get any closer as Waynesburg tacked on five more runs before the conclusion.

Clark and junior Caleb Lehman both went 2/5 with a run scored, with Lehman tallying a double. Vogel, Lehman and Cuello all stole a base. Chatham was outhit in game two 14-8 and also committed two errors in the field.

Four Cougars toed the rubber in game two. Junior Kelli Jenkins got the start and went an inning with one strikeout and giving up the first two runs. She was relieved by junior Trevor Salvior, who went 2.0 innings and took the loss after allowing four runs, all earned. Sophomore Eric Paulin went 3.1 innings and allowed five runs, two earned while striking out a pair and classmate Cole Couchman finished the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit.

The Cougars visit the Washington & Jefferson Presidents for a PAC double header on Saturday, April 17 with the first game commencing at 1:00 p.m.
