PITTSBURGH, Pa. - April 1, 2021 - Women's Hockey hosted Alvernia University in the Quarterfinal round of the 2021 UCHC Women's Championships this afternoon. After a thrilling back-and-forth battle, the Cougars finished on top with a sudden death overtime victory, ending the game with a final score of 4-3.
Senior captain Sydney Collins got the game going six minutes into regulation, finding the back of the net thanks to efforts by defenseman Isabella Siren and linemate Brooke Almond.
Junior transfer Grace Pavlovich would be the next on the board, netting her first NCAA goal to put the Cougars up by two heading into the second period. Linemates Hannah Glover and Kaylynn Savoy were awarded the assists.
Alvernia refused to give up despite the deficit, coming out and scoring the only two goals of the second period.
The third period was a neutral battle until the final five minutes, after which Alvernia took the lead. It would be Sydney Collins to the Cougars' rescue, putting home a powerplay goal off of a rebound from defenseman Dena Akers to force overtime.
Chatham hunkered down in overtime, getting their offensive spark back. They fired off five shots within the first nine minutes of the extra period, spending the majority of the time in Alvernia's zone.
Chatham's sixth shot would be their final, as Abi Fuzaylov wristed a rebound from Dena Akers just under the glove of Alvernia's Julia Beaven. Not only was the goal Fuzaylov's collegiate first, it also gave the team their first playoff win in program history.
The Cougars' next opponent and playing location are yet to be determined as they move on to the semifinal round.
