PITTSBURGH, Pa. -
February 25, 2021 - Chatham Men's Hockey faced off against Stevenson University for the third time this afternoon, this game being the first with conference points on the line. Chatham came up big, defeating Stevenson 4-3 after losing both non-conference matches to start the season.
The first period began similarly to the other two Stevenson games with the Mustangs making the first offensive strike. It would take ten minutes for the Cougars to respond, coming in the form of a season-first goal from sophomore
Lucas Rothe assisted by defensemenÂ
Aidan Girduckis and
Chris Dusek.
With the score tied heading into the second, the Cougars built off of their momentum. Under two minutes into the period, senior center
Cory King put Chatham ahead thanks to a won net-front battle from
Tristan Hillebert and
Michael Lamison. Soon after, Rothe notched his second goal of the game off of a feed from Dusek once again and senior
Michael Thamert.
Chatham maintained their offense heading into the third as junior
Michael Lamison put one past Stevenson goaltender Ryan Kenny, thanks to some heads-up passing from King and Hillebert.
It would take Stevenson another twelve minutes to make a comeback attempt, but to no avail. Despite two quick goals just ten seconds apart with just over a minute left in regulation, the Cougars held down the Mustang offense to earn their second UCHC win of the season.
Defensively, the Cougars had a strong showing.
Ricardo Gonzalez was stellar in net, stopping a season-high 40 shots. The team went two for two on penalty kills, and shut down the Mustang offense for over 54 minutes prior to their third period rally.
The Cougars now stand at 2-1 in the UCHC (2-3 overall). Today's win makes history as Chatham's first-ever program win against Stevenson.
