Late-Game Scoring Leaves Series Tied for Women’s Hockey

REISTERSTOWN, MD - February 21, 2021 - Women's Hockey traveled to Stevenson University this afternoon for game two of their conference series. After two scoreless periods, Stevenson netted two quick goals, and the Cougars were unable to catch up. The game ended in a 2-1 loss for Chatham.

The first period was a battle of the goaltenders, keeping the game tied at zero. Chatham took two penalties, but shut down the Mustangs on both power play attempts. Despite good scoring chances for both teams throughout the period, the score remained at zero heading into the second.

Chatham turned on the offense in the second period, getting 11 shots off compared to Stevenson's six. Stevenson goaltender Annika Carlander was strong in net, not letting the Cougars gain the upper hand. At the other end, Chatham goaltender Lily Rogers turned away all six shots. The period remained even-strength throughout, with neither team taking a penalty.

The third period remained tied at zero until the 13-minute mark with Stevenson's Ally Gibson putting one home for the Mustangs. Three minutes later, Angelica Saluzzo followed suit, putting Stevenson up by two late in the game.

The Cougars made a valiant comeback effort, but fell short. First-year Allison Corser-James netted her first collegiate goal just 23 seconds after Saluzzo's, putting her at three points in just two games. First-year Ariel Garbin picked up her second point assisting Corser-James, and sophomore Brooke Almond secured her first of the season.

Despite a 6-on-4 in the final 15 seconds of the game, the Cougars were unable to get the equalizer.

First-year Lily Rogers had her first career start in net, steering away 21 of 23 shots aimed her way. Corser-James led the Cougars with five shots on goal followed by junior defenseman Ashley Marchant with four. Dena Akers once again led the team in blocks with three, senior Sydney Collins and sophomore Isabella Siren each contributing two.

With the loss, the Cougars move to 1-1 in UCHC play. Their next series is against Wilkes University with a home game on Friday, February 26th and the corresponding away game on Sunday, February 28th.
