February 26, 2021 - Chatham University Women's Hockey returned to UCHC play this afternoon after a series split with Stevenson in their opening weekend. The Cougars bested the Wilkes University Colonels by a score of 4-1, now putting Chatham at a 2-1 overall record.
Chatham began their offensive reign shortly after puck drop with
Sydney Collins scoring her second goal of the season with assists to linemate
Allison Corser-James and first-year defenseman
Roxee Hughes. Not four minutes later, the Cougars struck again, this time with first-year
Kaylynn Savoy netting her first collegiate goal thanks to passes from sophomore
Dena Akers and first-year
Lauren Carmody.
Heading into the second period with a two-goal deficit, the Colonels settled into their defensive tactics. They only allotted Chatham one goal, which was scored by Corser-James on a solo rush. The Cougars spent a fair amount of time on the penalty kill throughout the period, but did so successfully.
The third period was Chatham's lowest shooting period, but the Cougars still managed to score. First-year
Cameron Carmody connected with
Lauren Carmody from
Grace Pavlovich to put one past the Wilkes goaltender, marking her first collegiate goal as well. Three minutes later, the Colonels got on the board thanks to a powerplay opportunity, but it was not sufficient enough for a comeback.
The Cougars finished the game with four goals on 54 shots, two of which were scored on the powerplay. Senior
Sydney Collins won a game-high 14 face-offs and had a season-high 14 shots on goal. First-years
Lauren Carmody and
Allison Corser-James finished with two points apiece and goaltender
Katy Reed stopped 17 shots.
The Cougars continue their series against Wilkes on Sunday, February 28th, in Wilkes-Barre, PA at 3:30 PM.
