PITTSBURGH, Pa. - February 20th, 2021 - Chatham's Women's Hockey team began their season today on home ice against the Stevenson University Mustangs. The Cougars gained their footing after a two-goal deficit in the first period, scoring three unanswered goals for the win.
The first period was dominated by Stevenson's offense, who scored two goals within five minutes of each other.
The second period was Chatham's to win. They outshot the Mustangs 14-11, with junior goaltender Katy Reed turning away all 11 and allowing the Cougars to focus on an offensive comeback.
The team answered back quickly, with senior Sydney Collins scoring off of a chain of passes from line mate first-year Allison Corser-James and junior defenseman Ashley Marchant. Soon after, first-year Ariel Garbin netted her collegiate first, tying the game and allowing junior Grace Pavlovich and first-year Abi Fuzaylov to pin their first NCAA points on the assist.
The second half of the third period was high time for junior Ashley Marchant's second college hockey goal, which lifted the Cougars over the Mustangs as they failed to put anything else past Reed. Collins and Corser-James assisted on Marchant's goal, the trio finishing the game with two points apiece.
On the defensive side, junior Katy Reed stopped 30 of 32 shots fired her way throughout the game and sophomore Dena Akers led the team in blocks with three. First-year Cameron Carmody won a game-high 18 face-offs and Sydney Collins notched a team-high seven shots on goal to help generate offense.
The Cougars head to Reisterstown, Md. tomorrow afternoon to finish their conference series with Stevenson. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:45 PM.
