PITTSBURGH, Pa. – February 10, 2021 – After a slow start, Chatham put on an offensive onslaught against Saint Vincent Wednesday night, putting away the Bearcats 92-71. The win moves Chatham to 2-1 on the season.
It took Chatham 5:41 to get on the board after Saint Vincent scored the first seven points of the contest, but the Cougars were able to rally and lead by as many as eight late in the first half. Most of the damage was done from beyond the arc. Chatham knocked down half of its 18 three-point attempts in the first half and held Saint Vincent to 0-4 from deep.
In the second half, Chatham took over. The Cougars outscored Saint Vincent in the second half 52-37, the third most points ever scored in any half in the program's six-year history and the most since December 6, 2017. From the field, Chatham shot just under 56% in the second half and buried eight triples on 18 attempts, a 44% clip.
For the game, Chatham held the advantage in almost every category. The Cougars took good care of the basketball, only turning the ball over 10 times. Chatham forced 17 Bearcat turnovers and turned in 25 points off of turnovers compared to just eight by SVC.
Two Cougars scored over 20 points in the victory. Freshman
Simon Boyer earned his first career start and made the most of it, scoring 21 points on 8-12 from the field, including a 5-6 line from deep. Sophomore
Brandon Lavernia scored an even 20 and co-led the team with six rebounds alongside junior
Ben Pollock. Senior
Malik Potter turned in 17 points, dished out six assists and stole three Saint Vincent passes, and sophomore
Marcos Cintron added 16 points of his own.
The Cougars return to The Den on Saturday, February 13 against Thiel with a 1 PM tip.
