PITTSBURGH, Pa. – November 19, 2021 – In a wild Friday evening match at the Frozen Pond Arena, Chatham and Neumann traded blows all game long with neither side being able to land the knockout blow, ending the game in a 5-5 tie. Neumann ended up winning the shootout after the overtime period 2-1.
Neumann struck first on the power play right before the game reached the 14
th minute of action, putting the Cougars behind 1-0 after one. However, Chatham responded with a power play goal of its own with junior
Andrew Warhoftig scoring his second goal in as many games, getting assists by senior
Michael Lamison and junior
Matt Mood. 55 seconds later, sophomore
Max Wigfield notched his first collegiate goal after getting a pass on the left goal line. Neumann added a goal late in the second period to tie the game 2-2 after the second intermission.
The third period was an offensive onslaught, with both teams scoring three goals. Chatham struck first when senior
Tristan Simm scored the first of three points, an unassisted goal that not only slipped past Neumann's keeper, but also put the Cougars up 3-2. Neumann tied the game a minute later, but it appeared as if junior
Lucas Rothe delivered the goal that could have put Chatham up for good. Simm and Lamison combined for the assists as Chatham went up 4-3. After the second of two five-minute Neumann penalties commenced, Chatham went up 5-3 with junior
Aidan Girduckis scoring the goal, with Simm and first-year
Dimitri Wey assisting.
Both teams committed penalties in the late stages of the game. With Neumann facing a 4-on-3, it got a shorthanded goal with just under three minutes to play in regulation. Still on the power play due to the five-minute penalty, the Knights pulled the goalie to give Neumann five attackers, which turned out to be the advantage as they tied the game 5-5. After neither team could break even in the overtime period, there was a shootout portion that ended up going Neumann's way. The lone goal on the shootout for Chatham was notched by Wigfield.
Chatham held a slim 44-40 advantage in shots on goal, with Simm taking six of those shots, four in the third period. The Cougars trailed in faceoff wins 36-33 but committed six penalties for 12 minutes compared to Neumann's nine penalties for a lofty 48 minutes. Senior goaltender
Ricardo Gonzalez made 35 saves.
The Cougars hit home ice for the final of a five-game home stretch to begin UCHC play, this time against Manhattanville tomorrow, November 20 for a 4:00 puck drop.
