PITTSBURGH, Pa. – November 12, 2021 – The Chatham men's hockey team faced its second of two difficult tests to begin the season with a home match against No. 3 Utica on Friday night at the Frozen Pond Arena. The Cougars were turned away by the Pioneers 10-1.
Chatham fell behind early in the first period with a pair of Utica goals scored just six and eight minutes into the contest. The Cougars were able to keep the score put after the first intermission, but that deficit only grew to 5-0 after the Pioneers scored three straight. Chatham's lone score came with 1:12 to play in the second stanza when senior
Michael Lamison connected with classmate
Tristan Simm to make the score 5-1 after two.
Unfortunately, the third period was not kind to the Cougars. Chatham gave up five goals in the period, two of them on the power play and three of them within the first five minutes of the period. Chatham ended up falling by a final score of 10-1 when all was said and done.
For the game, Chatham was outshot 45-16 and found itself giving up five power play opportunities to Utica. Simm, first-year
Heath Drye, juniors
Lucas Rothe and
Andrew Warhoftig all had a pair of shots on goal, with the former of the four breaking through. First-year goalie
Thomson Phinney got his first collegiate start and made 31 saves in 45:34. He was relieved by sophomore
Peter Siolas for the final 14:26, making four saves.
The Cougars look to bounce back in less than 24 hours as they host Nazareth at the Frozen Pond Arena on Saturday, November 13. Puck drops at 5:30.
