Women's Volleyball Earn First Conference Win of the Season

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Chatham Women's Volleyball (5-5, 1-1 PAC) team earned their first conference win and extended their home win streak with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-9) sweep over the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (1-13, 0-2 PAC) Wednesday night at the Athletic & Fitness Center. 

The Cougars would ensure an early lead in the match by only allowing the Yellow Jackets to score just eight points in the opening set. The Cougars would go on five separate scoring runs in the first set, earning no less than three points in a run. The first major group of points came from two Yellow Jackets errors followed by a kill from Evie White and two kills from Maddy Roberts to make it 11-4. The Cougars would then go up 17-5 with the addition of two Zoie Bateman kills, another kill from Roberts, and three more errors from the Yellow Jackets. Finally, to end the set, Roberts would add another kill and Becca Gesner would get the final kill to make it 25-8. 

While the Cougars would remain in control for the second set, the Yellow Jackets would bring more of a challenge only allowing the Cougars to go on three scoring runs. The Cougars would get an early 5-2 jump with the help from two Yellow Jacket errors and kills from Bateman and Roberts. After more points were traded back and forth, the Cougars would go on a seven-point run which included kills from White and Roberts and three service aces from Delaney Schwind. The Cougars final group of points before finishing the set would come from three Bateman kills and a Paige Watson kill.

The Cougars would once again dominate the final set and finish the game limiting the Yellow Jackets to just nine points this set. An early kill from Gesner and a service ace from Bateman would put the Cougars up 4-1. After some substitutions and a timeout, the Cougars would go up 10-3 with kills from Annelese Atkinson and White and another service ace from Schwind. The Cougars would close the set out with a six point run which included a kill from Gesner and the final point would be a service ace from Mackenzie Moore. 

Bateman led the Cougars with 11 kills, three service aces and hit .222 with just five errors on 27 attacks totaling 14.5 points. Kate Giannetta would lead the match with 12 assists and add five digs. Schwind finished with four serving aces, 10 assists, four digs, and one kill. Dougherty was a defensive machine as she led the team in digs with 19 and had eight assists.  

The Cougars outhit Waynesburg .350 to -.104 and held a 36-12 advantage in kills. Chatham also recorded 11 service aces while only allowing one. 

The Cougars will continue PAC play when they hit the road and head to New Wilmington, PA this Saturday, October 3rd to take on the Westminster Titans at 5:30PM.
