Baseball Splits Doubleheader in Latrobe

LATROBE, Pa. – Chatham Baseball (18-7, 4-6 PAC) split their doubleheader Wednesday at Saint Vincent (8-16, 4-6), taking game one 10-3 but dropping game two 14-12.

The Cougars pounced early in the first game, with Keegan McGraw's sacrifice lineout opening the scoring in the second inning, followed by Devin Fluhmann's RBI single. Nolan Boehm's double in the fourth put Chatham up 3-0, and the Cougars would add two more runs in the inning on a Fluhmann sacrifice bunt and Dominic Colarusso's RBI base knock. The Bearcats would score 3 of their own runs in the bottom of the inning, but Chatham would have a response in the fifth. McGraw produced a second sacrifice hit to bring Eddie Rueda home, Boehm brought around Matt Brandt and Cooper Baxter with a base hit, and an error led to Boehm crossing the plate. Up 9-3, Fluhmann's RBI on a fielder's choice completed the scoring in the Cougars' 7-run victory.

Boehm and Fluhmann both went 2-4 in the contest with 3 RBI's and Boehm crossed the plate twice. McGraw was 1-2 with an HBP, 2 RBIs and scored. Brandt and Baxter were each 2-3 with 3 runs scored and a double, and Baxter twice reached first on walks while Brandt was hit by 2 pitches. Cason Bennett picked up his third win of the season on the mound for Chatham, delivering a scoreless 4 2/3 innings while allowing 4 hits and striking out 5 out of the bullpen. Gianni Cantini's 3 runs allowed were unearned, and he gave up 2 hits in his 3 1/3 inning start. Julian Baez additionally pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

The Cougars struck for 4 runs in the second inning of game two, as Colarusso's bases-loaded walk put Chatham ahead 1-0. A wild pitch and 2-RBI single for Angelo DeLeonardis later and it was a 4-0 advantage for the Cougars. Hayden Woodward led off the fourth inning with his first home run of the season, two wild pitches brought in Fluhmann and Colarusso. After Rueda's RBI fielder's choice plated DeLeonardis, Chatham led 8-0. Saint Vincent got a run back in the bottom half, but a Colarusso sac bunt scored Fluhmann for a 9-1 Cougar advantage that would not hold up. The Bearcats cut their deficit to 9-5 heading into the sixth when Baxter launched a home run over the center field fence to make it a 10-5 ballgame. In the bottom of the inning Saint Vincent completed its comeback, crossing the plate nine times. Rueda's double in the eighth brought home Tommy Schubert and DeLeonardis but would not be enough to prevent the Bearcats from earning the split.

Colarusso was 1-2 at the plate in game two, driving in 2 while scoring twice and drawing a walk. DeLeonardis and Rueda both went 2-5 with 2 RBIs and DeLeonardis scored twice with an HBP. Fluhmann scored 3 runs while drawing 2 walks with a triple. Schubert scored and doubled in his only at-bat, and Baxter was 1-4 with 2 runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
