Softball Drops Doubleheader to Golden Tornadoes

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – It was an early morning for the Chatham Cougar Softball team (12-24, 6-12 PAC) as they took on the Geneva Golden Tornadoes (26-6, 13-3) at historic West Field. The Cougars dropped game one 8-2 before also falling 5-0 in game two.

The Cougars would go down in the first five innings as the Golden Tornadoes scored seven runs. The Cougars answered in the bottom of the fifth when senior Chelsea Stabile singled to center field, allowing freshman Gaby McTavish to score one run. Both teams scored their final runs of the game in the seventh inning when the Golden Tornadoes scored one, and McTavish scored off senior Kayleen Garcia's hit. McTavish and Garcia both led the Cougars in game one with 2 hits.

In the circle there was a variety of Cougars today, starting with senior Victoria Murren, freshmen Madi Gorney and Caytlin Redeye entered in relief. Murren pitched for four innings, giving up seven hits and striking out one batter. Gorney would come in for two innings, only giving up one hit. Redeye would come in to close for the seventh inning, giving up three hits.

The Cougars fell 5-0 in the second game as the offense went dormant. The Golden Tornadoes jumped ahead immediately with a run in the top of the first inning. The Cougars looked to answer in the bottom of the third inning as Alison Livelsberger singled to open the inning. She was immediately thrown out trying to steal second base. Despite a single by McTavish later in the inning, the Cougars were unable to score the tying run. The Golden Tornadoes would add a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. As the Cougars' offense went down in order for three straight innings. The Golden Tornadoes added two runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 5-0. The Cougars had a running reach via error but were unable to advance past first base, ultimately falling 5-0 in game two.

Hannah Uhrinek started game two and pitched six innings allowing just three runs, two earned. Uhrinek struck out three batters, walking two batters and allowing six hits. Josie Underdonk entered to pitch the seventh inning allowing two runs; both were earned. Cougars recorded three singles, one each by McTavish, Murren and Livelsberger.

The Cougars are back in action next Thursday, April 23rd, as they travel to Steubenville, Ohio to take on the Franciscan Barons, with first pitch times scheduled at 3:00 & 5:00 PM.
