Women's Lacrosse Clinches Playoff Spot with 25-0 Win over Tomcats

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - On Wednesday, the Cougars (10-3, 6-1) took on the Thiel Tomcats (0-11, 0-6 PAC) in the final home midweek game of the regular season. The Cougars jumped to an early lead, cruising to their fourth shutout victory of the season, and third in the last four games, winning easily 25-0. With today's win, the Cougars have clinched a spot in the PAC Tournament.

The Cougars first goal  came from the stick of Rachel Luomala, assisted by Madison Kata, that was the 11th goal of the season for Luomala. Campbell Murphy scored the next goal just over a minute later, also her 11th of the season scoring unassisted. Natalie Ondo ended the nearly four minute scoring drought with her first goal of the game, 26th of the season, assisted by Rachel Luomala. Luomala then scored her second goal of the game, 12th of the season, just a minute and a half later, assisted by Bella Walski-Rodriguez. Just a minute later, Izzy Davanti scored her first goal of the game, ninth of the season, unassisted. Only 13 seconds later, the Cougars leading goal scorer scored her first goal of the game, 32nd of the season, assisted by Campbell Murphy. Natlie Ondo followed that 30 seconds later with her second goal of the day, 27th of the season, assisted by Bella Walski-Rodriguez. Campbell Murphy scored her second goal of the game, 12th of the season, on a free-position shot with just 90 seconds left in the opening quarter. Before the quarter could end, Natalie Ondo scored her third goal of the game, 28th of the season, assisted by Rachel Luomala to complete the first quarter hat trick. That gave the Cougars a 9-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cougars stayed on the gas in the second quarter adding seven more goals before halftime. Bella Walski-Rodriguez scored her second goal of the day, 33rd of the season, assisted by Campbell Murphy to open the scoring in the second quarter. She was followed just 20 seconds later by Natalie Ondo scoring her fourth goal of the game, 29th of the season, assisted by Murphy as well. Ondo scored her fifth goal of the game, 30th of the season, assisted by Izzy Davanti, two minutes later. 90 seconds later, Reagan Fulcher scored her first goal of the game, fourth of the season, assisted by Izzy Davanti. Davanti ended a two minute scoring drought with her second goal of the day, 10th of the season, scoring unassisted. Becca Baker scored the first goal of her career, unassisted, nearly four minutes later. With just over a minute left in the half, Sara Kaesshaefer scored her first goal of the game, 20th of the season unassisted. That gave the Cougars a 16-0 lead that they took into halftime.

The second half was not as explosive offensively for the Cougars only managing nine goals in the half. It got started with Bella Walski-Rodriguez completing her hat trick, scoring her 34th goal of the season, unassisted just two minutes into the third quarter. Natalie Ondo followed, three and a half minutes later, with her sixth goal of the game, 31st of the season, assisted by Madison Kata. Two and a half minutes later, Sofia Hoetzlein-Sirman scored her first goal of the day, third of the season, assisted by Izzy Davanti. Hoetzlein-Sirman followed with her second goal of the day, a few minutes later, assisted by Campbell Murphy. Davanti closed the third quarter by completing her hat trick, 11th goal of the season, unassisted to put the Cougars ahead 21-0 with just over a minute to play in the quarter. That would be the score as the teams took the final break and headed to the fourth quarter.

Campbell Muphy started the fourth quarter for the Cougars by completing her hat trick with her 13th goal of the season, assisted by Sarah Doherty on the player advantage. Doherty then followed with a goal of her own, her first of the game and third of the season, assisted by Macella Valentine. Samantha Orr ended a four minute scoring drought with her first goal of the game, fourth of the season, assisted by Doherty. The two would connect again just 75 seconds later for Orr's second goal of the game, fifth of the season. That put the Cougars ahead by a score of 25-0 with over eight minutes to play. The Cougars would hold onto the lead and win by a final score of 25-0 completing their third shutout in four games.

The Cougars were led offensively by Campbell Murphy's seven point (3G 4A) performance. Izzy Davanti (3G 3A) and Natalie Ondo (6G) each recorded six points while Bella Walski-Rodriguez (3G 2A) recorded five. The Cougars had four players all record four ground balls, which led the team. Marcella Valentine recorded a team high eight draw controls, while Sofia Hoetzlein-Sirman recorded four caused turnovers, leading the Cougars. That gives Hoetzlein-Sirman 34 caused turnovers on the season, breaking the single season record. The Cougars completed all three clear attempts they had and allowed the Tomcats to only complete 3-of-19 clear attempts. The Tomcats only had one shot on goal, it was saved by Meghan Cuza-Berry who recorded her 10th win of the season. The Cougars only turned the ball over seven times while the Tomcats recorded 22 turnovers.

The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday April 22nd when they travel to Latrobe, PA for a 7 PM match up with Saint Vincent.
