Baseball Falls Short Against Terriers

HIRAM, OH. – Chatham Baseball (20-9, 6-7 PAC) hit the road and faced off against Hiram (9-18, 6-7 PAC) on Tuesday for a conference doubleheader. The Cougars fell in game one 12-9 after a strong comeback attempt fell short in a rainy affair.

The Terriers' bats came out on fire, scoring eight unanswered runs in the first two innings. The Cougars clawed back in the 3rd, scratching across a run, on a RBI single by Eddie Rueda, that plated Angelo DeLeonardis. The Cougars seized momentum and cut the lead to 8-5 after putting a four-spot in their half of the third. Angelo DeLeonardis cleared the bases, sending a grand slam off the scoreboard, for his first home run of the season. Nolan Boehm got the party started in the top of the 7th, sending an RBI single through the left side, to get within two. Eddie Rueda would put his stamp on another crooked inning for the Cougars, clearing the bases with a 3 RBI double. The Cougars would enter the rain delay with a slim 9-8 lead. After the sun came back out, the Terriers scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to clinch the 12-9 victory.

Angelo DeLeonardis led the way for the Cougars offensively, collecting 2 hits, including his homerun, scoring 3 times, driving in 4, and walking twice. Eddie Rueda drove in 3 RBI and collected 3 hits, including a double. With his three hits on the day, Rueda surpassed the 100-hit plateau. Caleb Jones also had a productive day, collecting 3 hits, including 2 doubles, and scoring twice. Nolan Boehm finished his day with an RBI. On the mound, Julian Baez fired 1.2 innings of scoreless ball, striking out two along the way. Ethan Botkin pitched 4.0 innings, limited the Terriers to 1 run, and struck out 1.

Due to the weather, game two of the doubleheader has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 15th. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm at historic West Field in Munhall, PA.
