PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Chatham Baseball (20-7, 6-6 PAC) swept their doubleheader Saturday against Westminster (18-8, 9-3 PAC), taking game one 6-1 and game two 4-2. The two victories have also set a new program record for single-season wins with 20.
Devin Fluhmann's base knock in the second inning brought Keegan McGraw and Matt Brandt across the plate for a 2-0 Cougars lead. Then in the bottom of the third, Cooper Baxter's single to center field plated Eddie Rueda to tack another run onto their advantage. Still up 3-0 in the eighth, Chatham rallied with 2 outs, loading the bases for Nolan Boehm. The junior doubled to right center field, scoring McGraw, Brandt and Rueda to put the game out of reach.
Cason Bennett tossed a complete game for the Cougars, allowing just an earned run on 8 hits with 6 strikeouts. Rueda registered his eighth 3-hit game of the season, going 3-4 at the plate in game one and crossing the plate twice with 3 stolen bases. Boehm produced 3 RBIs with his double. Baxter went 2-4 with an RBI for Chatham. Fluhmann had 2 RBIs and a stolen base, and Brandt and McGraw both went 1-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored in the 5 and 6 spots in the order.
In game two, the Cougars quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. Dominic Colarusso singled home Hayden Woodward to double the lead in the 2nd. The Titans would tie it up in their half of the third inning. Devin Fluhmann scored on a passed ball in the 6th and a Cooper Baxter RBI single in the 9th provided insurance, clinching the Cougars sweep.
Matt Bamford started on the mound, allowing 2 earned runs and striking out 9 over 5.0 innings of work. Bamford also surpassed the 100 career strikeouts mark, becoming the third Cougars pitcher in program history to do so. Gianni Cantini pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless relief, holding the Titans to 1 hit, and striking out 5. Dominic Colarusso led the way at the plate, picking up two hits and 1 RBI. Eddie Rueda and Cooper Baxter continued their strong performance, picking up two hits each.
Baseball travels to Hiram on Wednesday April 14th for a PAC doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for a 1 pm start.
