PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Chatham Men's Volleyball (14-8, 8-4 PAC) outlasted Grove City (11-13, 4-5) on Wednesday night at the Athletic and Fitness Center, wrapping up their regular season with a 3-2 (25-17, 25-27, 30-32, 25-21, 19-17) victory.
Tim McCabe tallied a match-high 24 kills on .298 hitting for the Cougars, additionally recording a season high 4 aces with 5 digs.
Ben Shelestak notched a double-double with 17 kills and 16 digs.
Derek Paul contributed 16 kills, 9 digs and 3 blocks.
Armani George hit .467 for the match with 8 kills, 4 blocks and 5 digs.
RJ Nagg dished out a career-high 61 assists, the most in the PAC this season.
John Gasiorowski led the match in digs with 17 for Chatham.
The Cougars looked strong in set one, using a 6-0 run with the help of two McCabe aces to go up 24-13. Paul's kill would give Chatham a 1-0 advantage in the match. Another ace by McCabe knotted the second set at 22, but the Wolverines were able to take advantage of a couple of Cougar service errors to even the match. In set three, two Shelestak kills and a George kill propelled a 6-0 run that gave Chatham a 21-19 lead. Grove City would not go away, however, and despite three kills and an ace by McCabe in the remainder of the set, the Wolverines brushed off three set points to win 32-30. In the fourth set, McCabe had back-to-back kills amidst a 6-1 Cougars' run that put them ahead 19-12. George's kill would eventually force a decisive fifth set. Two kills by Paul as well as kills from Shelestak and George gave Chatham a 12-10 advantage. Grove City would come back to tie it and had match point at 14-13, but multiple kills by Paul and a late kill by Shelestak allowed the Cougars to eke out the victory.
Chatham had a 2.45 hitting percentage for the match and held a 69-60 edge in kills. The Wolverines hit .179 while holding a 15-7 advantage in blocks.
The Cougars now have their sights set on the PAC Tournament, and as the third seed they will host Geneva on Tuesday, April 7.
