Cougars Sweep Double Header Against Blazers

Davenport, FL – Chatham  Baseball (9-1, 0-0 PAC) swept its doubleheader with Elms (0-2, 0-0 GEAC) on Friday. The Cougars beat the Blazers 7-3 in game one and 4-1 in game two to keep the ball rolling early in the season. 

Elms scored three runs in the bottom half of the first inning in game one, jumping quickly out to a 3-0 lead. Eddie Rueda picked up an RBI in the top of the 3rd inning to cut into the lead. The Cougars then scored in each of the next three innings. Rueda singled one home in the 4th, and a Ty Blackburn walk forced in another in the 5th. Zane Pollack hit one run home in the 6th to clinch the Cougars 4-run victory. 

Riley Baum was strong on the mound in game two, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing 3 earned, all in the first inning, and striking out 7. The Heath, OH native picked up his first win of the season. Ethan Botkin pitched a hitless and scoreless 1 1/1 innings out of the pen and struck out two Blazers. Eddie Rueda went 3-5 with 2 RBI while sweet sweet Angelo DeLeonardis picked up a double, going 1-2 with 2 walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Zane Pollack went 2-3 with a walk and knocked in 1 RBI. 

After giving up another early run in game two, the Cougars responded quickly in the bottom half of inning one to regain the lead. Back-to-back doubles from Matt Brandt and Eddie Rueda tied the game at 1-1. Cooper Baxter then slugged in another one, earning the RBI. Elms responded in their half of the 2nd, but a balk forced a run home for the Cougars in the 3rd inning. The Cougars threatened, but the teams traded zeros over the next two innings. A Devin Fluhmann RBI single provided an insurance run in the 6th as the Cougars held on for the victory. 

Eddie Rueda continued his hot stretch in game two, going 2-4, picking up two more runs scored, and earning an RBI. Devin Fluhmann went 1-2 with an RBI while Caleb Jones picked up a crucial hit off the bench. Out of the pen, Garrett Blosser pitched 3 2/3 scoreless relief, picking up 2 strikeouts and earning the win. Cason Bennett came on to pick up 4 strikeouts in his 2 innings, earning the save in the Cougars' win. 

Baseball is in for a quick turnaround, finishing up their spring training trip with a doubleheader against Pitt-Greensburg tomorrow, March 4th. First Pitch of game one is scheduled for 4 pm at Chain 'O' Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL.
