Baseball Falls to Gators in Doubleheader

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Chatham Baseball (14-6, 1-5 PAC) dropped both games of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Allegheny (14-7, 6-0) by final scores of 7-0 and 5-4.

The Gators plated a couple of runs in the bottom of the first inning in game one, which would prove to be enough for the victory. Allegheny would additionally tack on runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

Caleb Jones went 2-2 and reached base twice on walks in game one. Angelo DeLeonardis was 2-5 at the plate. Matt Brandt went 1-3 with a walk, and Cooper Baxter, Zane Pollack and Devin Fluhmann each were 1-4 in the contest. On the mound, Cason Bennett allowed 4 earned runs on 10 hits with 4 strikeouts in his 6 innings of work. Julian Baez recorded a shutout inning in relief for the Cougars.

Chatham opened the scoring in the third inning of game two when Eddie Rueda's base hit up the middle brought home DeLeonardis. After the Gators tied the score in the third, Keegan McGraw's base knock plated Hayden Woodward to put the Cougars back in front 2-1. Allegheny would take the lead with a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning, but another RBI single from Rueda tied the score again in the fifth. The Gators' offense would come through in the seventh, as a 2-run double gave Allegheny a 5-3 advantage. An RBI groundout from Fluhmann in the eighth would make the score 5-4 and advance runners to second and third, but the Chatham comeback fell just short.

Rueda went 3-4 with 2 RBIs and a walk in the second game. McGraw was 2-4 with an RBI for the Cougars. DeLeonardis had another multi-hit game, going 2-5 at the plate and scoring a run. Caleb Jones and Hayden Woodward both went 1-4 with an RBI. Gianni Cantini was the starting pitcher for Chatham, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 3 Ks in 4 innings of work. Matt Bamford took the loss after allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits, tallying 8 strikeouts in his 4 innings in relief.

The Cougars are scheduled to visit La Roche on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest.
