Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Wolverines

Grove City, PA – Chatham Baseball (13-3, 0-2 PAC) hit the road against Grove City (7-8, 2-0 PAC) to open the conference portion of the schedule. The Cougars fell in both games, losing 6-5 (12 inn.) in game one and 8-4 in game two. This snapped the Cougars 9-game winning streak.

In game one, the Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead, breaking the deadlock in the top of the 2nd inning. A Cooper Baxter single and Nolan Boehm hit-by-pitch set the table for Devin Fluhmann, who doubled home two. Matt Brandt doubled another one home, and an Eddie Rueda sacrifice fly put the Cougars on top. The Wolverines would get one back in the bottom of the 4th. The Cougars responded in the top half of the 6th, scratching one across on Hayden Woodward's RBI single. The Wolverines got within one, scoring in their half of the 6th, and tied the game 5-5 in the 8th. After trading zeros in the 9th, 10th, and 11th, the Wolverines struck in the 12th to clinch the 6-5 victory.

Devin Fluhmann led the way offensively, going 3-5 with a double, scoring 2 runs, picking up 2 RBIs, and collecting a stolen base. Matt Brandt, Hayden Woodward, and Eddie Rueda all collected an RBI each, while Cooper Baxter added 2 hits (1 double). On the mound, Cason Bennett started going 5.2 IP, striking out 3. Ethan Botkin came out of the pen, taking the tough luck loss, blanking the Wolverines across 5.2 IP, collecting 4 Ks.

In game two, Grove City struck first, scoring 3 runs in the 1st. Chaham responded in the 2nd. Cooper Baxter led off with a single, and Caleb Jones doubled behind him to put two men on and nobody out. The pair would score on an RBI groundout from Zane Pollack and a throwing error by the catcher. The Cougars would add another run in the 3rd and the 4th but trailed 5-4 after five innings of play. The Wolverines tacked on 3 more insurance runs, making the final score 8-4.

Angelo DeLeonardis added two hits (1 double) in game two with a run scored.
