PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Chatham Baseball (14-4, 1-3 PAC) split their doubleheader with Bethany (12-6, 2-2) on Tuesday afternoon at West Field.
Zane Pollack hit a walk-off double to win the first game for the Cougars 9-8, and the Bison put up 4 runs in the sixth inning of the second game to secure a split with a 5-2 victory.
The Chatham bats started off scorching hot, as
Cooper Baxter's first-inning triple put the Cougars up 2-0 before
Matt Brandt's productive groundout brought home
Cooper Baxter. In the third, Bethany came back to take a 4-3 lead, but
Eddie Rueda singled in
Devin Fluhmann to even the score. He would get another RBI single in the sixth, then a Baxter sac fly and
Hayden Woodward RBI groundout gave Chatham a 7-5 lead. The Bison tied the game in the seventh, but in the bottom half of the inning,
Nolan Boehm's RBI double restored the Cougars' lead. A bases loaded walk in the ninth gave Bethany life, but
Zane Pollack ended the battle by driving in
Matt Brandt from first base with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth for the dramatic victory.
Rueda went 3-4 at the plate in game one while scoring a run and driving in two Cougars. Baxter was 1-3 with a walk, 3 RBIs and scored a run.
Devin Fluhmann scored 3 runs with 2 walks and went 1-2,
Nolan Boehm had doubles in both of his at bats, scored, and drove in a run,
Angelo DeLeonardis scored twice on 3 walks, and
Matt Brandt went 2-5 with an RBI and scored.
Matt Bamford picked up the win on the mound by allowing just an earned run on two hits with 3 strikeouts in his 3 innings of work.
Riley Baum allowed 4 earned runs on 7 hits with 5 Ks in his 5-inning start for Chatham.
Eddie Rueda kicked off the scoring in game two, giving the Cougars a 1-0 advantage when he brought home
Angelo DeLeonardis on a fielder's choice. The Bison struck for 4 runs in the sixth and another in the eighth to take control of the game.
Eddie Rueda scored via an error in the bottom of the inning to get a run back, but it would not be enough as Bethany was able to hold on take a game from the series on the road.
DeLeonardis was the only Cougar with a multi-hit second game, going 2-4 and scoring a run. Rueda went 1-4 with a run and an RBI, and
Hayden Woodward and
Matt Brandt also had hits for Chatham.
Cooper Baxter took the loss, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 5 Ks in his 5 2/3 inning start, while
Nick Martin,
Matt Kossey and
Julian Baez all pitched scoreless innings in relief.
Baseball will compete in their third series of conference play on Saturday at Allegheny. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
