Softball Secures Two Wins in Home Opener Despite Long Night

PITTSBURGH, PA - It was a long and eventful night for the Chatham Cougars Softball team (3-9) as they would face off in their home opener, and first double header of the season, against the Carlow Celtics (1-11).

The Cougars would open game one against the Celtics with a 4-2 win. Scoring runs for the Cougars would be freshman Brianna Hnatow, sophomore Riley Jones, and seniors Chelsea Stabile and Olivia Harris. The offense wouldn't be limited just to their runs as six Cougars each got a hit as well: freshmen Madi Gorney and Gaby McTavish, sophomores Anna Borst, Delaney Cole, and Kyla Milne, and senior Kayleen Garcia. Gorney and Garcia would also be the two Cougars responsible for RBIs with one each.

Starting on the mound for the Cougars would be senior Victoria Murren who pitched for 5.1 innings and only allowed four hits and one run while striking out three batters. Taking over for the last 1.2 innings would be sophomore Hannah Uhrinek who would secure the save for the Cougars only allowing two hits and one run to secure the win.

The Cougars second game would prove to be much more entertaining as they were able to come back and take the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning to win 11-7 right before abandoning the game due to technical difficulties. The scoring Cougars this time around would be: McTavish with two, Gorney, Murren, Stabile, Cole, Harris, freshmen Allison Livelsberger, Chloe Pagliarini, and Tori Cavanaugh, and sophomore Josie Underdonk. Murren would lead the way with hitting as she went four-for-four and Harris would follow right behind her going three-for-three. leading the way with two RBIs each was Cavanaugh and Harris followed by McTavish, Garcia, Murren, and Cole.

On the mound for the Cougars in game two would be Underdonk who allowed seven runs on eight hits striking out two batters in a total of 5.2 innings pitched. Sheaden Berkson would only find herself on the mound for a brief moment before ending the top of the 6th inning.

The Cougars are back in action this Saturday, March 21st, when they head to Meadville, PA to open PAC play and take on the Allegheny Gators at 2PM and 4PM.
