Geneseo, NY – On Saturday, #3 Chatham Men's Hockey (20-6-1, 11-6-1 UCHC) faced off against #2 SUNY Geneseo (18-7-1, 12-4-0 UCHC) in the UCHC Semi-Finals, the Cougars second appearance in as many years. In a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair, the Cougars fell to the Knights 7-5.
The Knights took control of the do-or-die game early in the first period. They opened the scoring just under four minutes into tonight's contest. The Knights continued to roll, doubling their lead five minutes later. The Cougars fired 11 shots-on-goal but could not capitalize on their opportunities, trailing 2-0 entering the first intermission.
The second period saw the game open up with the teams trading goal after goal. The Cougars got within one after Tyler Samodral found the back of the net at the 10:23 mark of the frame. His 14th goal of the season and 2nd of the playoffs was assisted by Nick Cyprian and Michael Roby. The Knights, however, responded quickly afterwards and broke the game open. They poured 3 goals in the back of the Cougars' net within a 2 ½ minute span, making it a 5-1 game. Not to be outdone, the Cougars would go on a run of their own, shortening the lead to 5-3, as the teams entered the final frame. Jake LaRusso scored his 11th goal of the season and 1st in the playoffs, assisted by Nick Cyprian and Tyler Samodral. 39 seconds later, Nick Babbie got his 1st of the playoffs from Kyle Contessa and Charlie Smith.
38 seconds into the third period, the Knights scored again, extending their lead to three goals. The Cougars pushed after and scored to get back within two. Michael Roby extended his conference lead in goals, scoring his 23rd of the season and 1st of the playoffs. Nick Babbie and Kadsen Johnson earned assists on this one. 4 ½ minutes later, Kyler Contessa scored his 7th of the season, assisted by Charlie Smith and Bekk McClaine, to pull the Cougars within one. The Knights responded with a goal 11 seconds later to ensure breathing room and held on as the seconds ticked away to end the Cougars' season.
5 different Cougars recorded multi-point games. Contessa, McClaine, Roby, and Samodral all led the way, tallying a goal and an assist each.
The Cougars finished the 2025-26 season with a 11-6-1 record in UCHC play and a program best 20-6-1 overall record.
