MARIETTA, Ohio - On Wednesday, the Cougars (1-1) took on the Marietta Pioneers (2-2), the Cougars lept out to a 7-0 lead at halftime and won easily 14-2 behind a record tying seven goal performance from
Thomas Whitaker.
The Cougars got the scoring started just over two minutes into the game, as
Thomas Whitaker scored his second goal of the season. Whitaker would score the next goal as well, followed by
Owen Millar and
Erik Sahlgren giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead after the first. The second quarter was similar with Millar scoring another goal and Whitaker increasing his game total to four with another pair in the second quarter. The Cougars took a 7-0 lead into halftime and the second half was much like the first.
Whitaker scored his fifth goal of the game early in the third quarter, then it was
Broden Zumbano scoring his first goal of the season. That gave the Cougars a 9-0 lead. The Pioneers would get on the board next, they would only manage the one goal in the third quarter however. Also scoring in the third quarter was
Sean Creeden,
Erik Sahlgren and Whitaker added two more lifting his game total to seven, tying the single game record. That would be all the scoring for Whitaker however as the Cougars and Pioneers traded goals in the fourth quarter as
Jacob Lubawy scored for the Cougars.
Whitaker led the Cougars with seven points, all goals. Lubawy had five points, one goal and four assists.
Cody Randal led the Cougars with six ground balls while winning 10 of 19 face offs.
Jesse Corser-James had four caused turnovers to lead all Cougars.
James Cipollone won his first game of the season making 11 saves and posting a remarkable .846 save rate against his former team.
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday February 21st when they play Virginia Wesleyan at 1 PM in Virginia Beach, Va.
