BETHANY, WV. – Chatham Women's Volleyball (6-6, 2-2 PAC) responded after dropping a tight opening set to defeat Bethany (4-12, 1-4 PAC) 3-1 (25-27, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23) on Wednesday night at Hummel Field House.
Chatham scored the first three points of the opening set and later used a 7-0 run to turn a 16-14 deficit into a 21-16 advantage. The Cougars reached set point at 24-21, but the Bison answered with four straight points to move ahead 25-24. A
Paige Watson kill tied the frame at 25 before Bethany claimed the final two points to take the set.
The Cougars responded by opening set two with three consecutive points and building a 9-4 lead behind a
Maddy Roberts service ace and a
Zoie Bateman kill. After Bethany pulled within 9-7, Chatham scored six straight points to extend its advantage to 15-7. The Bison later cut the deficit to 22-17, but kills from
Evie White and
Annelese Atkinson helped the Cougars close the frame with three consecutive points and even the match.
Chatham carried the momentum into set three, taking the first four points behind a
Kate Giannetta service ace and a Watson kill. Back-to-back aces from
Delaney Schwind later gave the Cougars an 11-5 advantage. Chatham remained in control and used another service ace from
Mackenzie Moore to build an 18-9 lead before Bateman secured the 25-16 set victory with a kill.
Bethany led 16-11 in the fourth frame before Chatham took control with seven consecutive points.
Becca Gesner recorded two kills during the run,
Kelly Dougherty served two aces and kills from
Evie White and
Alexia Bowers gave the Cougars an 18-16 advantage. Bethany battled back to pull within 24-23, but Chatham claimed the next point to complete the four-set victory.
Bateman led all players with 17 kills on .300 hitting and added six digs. Gesner finished with 12 kills, while
Evie White recorded 10 kills on a match-best .381 hitting percentage and totaled a match-high three blocks. Atkinson and Bowers contributed five and six kills, respectively.
Giannetta dished out a match-high 24 assists, collected 11 digs and served a match-high four aces. Schwind finished with 21 assists, seven digs and three aces. Dougherty led Chatham with 14 digs, while Roberts and Moore each added 12 digs.
Chatham outhit Bethany .197 to .114 and held a 54-40 advantage in kills. The Cougars also recorded 12 service aces to the Bison's seven and finished with a 75-71 edge in digs.
