GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Chatham men's soccer team (2-6-2, 1-3-1 PAC) was defeated on the road by Grove City College (8-1-3, 5-0 PAC) on Friday evening by a score of 7-1.
The Cougars would strike first with junior defender
Charlie Ayers would score with a header off of a free kick by sophomore midfielder
Nico Gibbins just 3 minutes into the game for Ayers's second goal of the season, with both goals coming in back-to-back games.
However, the lead was short lived when a defensive mishap in the 23rd minute led to Ayers committing a foul and being assessed a red card for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity. The Wolverines scored shortly after the subsequent free kick to tie the game and used the momentum to drop 5 unanswered goals in just 17 minutes, taking a 5-1 lead into the break. Grove City added to the lead with 2 more goals early in the second half, with one goal coming on a penalty kick.
Chatham split goalkeeping duties with sophomore
Elijah Smith getting the start and making 1 save in the first half before being relieved by senior
Max Cottrill, making 4 saves in the second half and going 1 for 2 stopping penalty kicks.
Men's soccer will take a short break from PAC play with a Tuesday afternoon match on October 6th down the Lincoln Highway against the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats at 3 PM.
