Cougars Draw with Bears

Potsdam, NY - On Saturday, Chatham Women's Hockey (1-10-2, 0-4-0 UCHC) faced off against SUNY Potsdam (5-6-2, 1-2-1 SUNYAC). The Cougars ultimately tied the Bears 2-2 but lost in overtime.

A minute into the game, the Cougars quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Senior Chelsea Clark found the back of the net for her 3rd of the season. The goal was assisted by Liv McTavish, extending her point streak to three games. The Bears would answer back, tying the game at the 6:11 mark of the 1st period. The Cougars quickly answered back with a goal of their own 28 seconds later. Sophomore Lily Schamear fired her 1st goal of the season past the goaltender, from Isabella Allsopp and Hailey Braaten. With the assist, Allsopp extended her point streak to 2 games.

In the second period, the Bears would come back again. They put one home at 7:06 to even the score 2-2. The Cougars would try to answer back, firing 12 shots, but could not solve the Bears' netminder. After some strong defensive play from the Cougars, the teams would enter a pivotal third period in a deadlock.

The third period went back and forth. The Cougars were sent to the power play three separate times, continuously putting pressure in the offensive zone, firing 10 shots on goal. The Bears, who had a power play of their own, were unable to convert in large part due to first-year goaltender Morgan Miller. Miller's strong performance was highlighted by a perfect 6 saves in the third period, which helped to force overtime.

In overtime, neither team could find the back of the net. Miller's strong play continued in the extra frame, stopping another 11 shots on goal. The game ended in a tie for the NCAA; however, the teams played the shootout, and the Cougars lost by a score of 2-1, in seven rounds.

Four different Cougars recorded a point. Abbey Cunkleman led the team with 5 blocks to support the strong defensive play. Miller finished the game recording 46 saves, good for a .958 SV %.

The Cougars will continue their weekend series with the Bears tomorrow, Saturday, January 17th, in Potsdam, NY. The puck will drop at 3 pm.
