PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Chatham Women's Volleyball (8-2, 3-0 PAC) dropped their final home non-conference match of the season on Thursday night by a 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23) scoreline to Penn State Altoona (4-8, 0-0 AMCC).
The teams played a tightly contested opening set in which neither team gained control until the Lady Lions used back-to-back kills from Lia Simanski to take a 24-21 lead before finishing off the set victory. The Cougars got back into the match in the second set, trailing 7-3 but taking 10 of the next 12 points. Chatham would hold their lead for the rest of the frame and
Devyn Kelley's ace won the set point. Two
Delaney Schwind aces helped the Cougars jump out to 7-1 advantage in set three. Penn State Altoona was unwavering, however, and fought back from a 15-10 deficit to edge Chatham for the match lead. The Cougars would stay within three points of the Lady Lions for the entirety of the fourth set, but Penn State Altoona narrowly put the match away.
Maggie Brewer was the match leader in kills with 14 for the Lady Lions. Simanski finished the match with 11 kills and 23 digs. Ella Hadley recorded 9 kills and 3 aces, and Brianna Woodring had 26 digs for Penn State Altoona.
For Chatham,
Maren Balint and
Becca Gesner both recorded 10 kills, with Balint recording a .588 hitting percentage.
Delaney Schwind tallied 22 assists along with 3 aces.
Evelyn White had a match high 6 blocks, and
Sierra Ricci continued her defensive proficiency with 31 digs. Both teams finished the match with a .077 attack percentage.
The Cougars will look to remain undefeated in PAC play on Saturday when they head to Geneva for a 7 p.m. match at Metheny Fieldhouse.
