WASHINGTON, Pa. - On Thursday, the #3 Cougars played the #2 Washington and Jefferson Presidents in the PAC Semifinals. With the looming threat of rain and some rain in the first half the Cougars pulled out a back and forth affair to advance to the first PAC Championship Game in program history.
The Cougars scored immediately following the opening draw as
Bailey Donofrio netted the first goal of the game, just 25 seconds into the game. The Cougars offense went silent for the remainder of the first quarter as they found themselves in a familiar place, down 4-1 headed into the second quarter. In the second quarter the Cougars, much like the PAC Quarterfinal Game, stormed back and took a lead into halftime. This time it was a one goal lead. In the third quarter, the two teams traded goals, with the Cougars clinging to a 9-8 lead. That lead was facilitated by
Erin Goodwin scoring on a
Tessa Hueber assist with less than one second left in the quarter. In the final quarter, the Cougars had a two goal lead with under eight minutes remaining. The Presidents then scored three straight goals to put themselves ahead with five minutes left in the game. The Cougars answered back when Goodwin scored once again with under four minutes to play. That was the score for a while and
Meghan Cuza-Berry made multiple impressive saves as the Cougars fended off the Presidents offense. With 20 seconds left in regulation, the Cougars regained possession and went the length of the field with
Tessa Hueber scoring the game winner with two seconds left on the clock. That put the Cougars ahead by a final score of 12-11.
The Cougars were led offensively by Goodwin who had four goals and an assist and Hueber who had three goals and an assist.
Bailey Donofrio also netted three goals.
Sam Beall-Dennell had a team high five ground balls and also led the way with three caused turnovers. Cuza-Berry ended the night with nine saves and a 45% save rate. The Cougars converted on 13 of 19 clear attempts.
The Cougars postseason march continues on May 3rd when they travel to Grove City to take on the top seeded Grove City Wolverines. That game will start at 1 PM.
