PITTSBURGH, Pa. - On Wednesday the Cougars (5-5, 3-2 PAC) continued PAC play as they hosted the Allegheny Gators (3-9, 2-3 PAC). The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and were able to hold on to the lead despite looking shaky at times as they won 10-8.
The first quarter was all Cougars as they scored the first five goals of the game and appeared to be pulling away.
Erin Goodwin got the scoring started for the Cougars, and
Kaya Miller,
Bailey Donofrio and
Tessa Hueber also added goals in the first quarter. The Gators defense stepped up in the second quarter and held the Cougars scoreless. The Cougars defense stood strong as well allowing only one lone goal as they took a 5-1 lead into the break. The second half started with the Gators scoring their second goal of the game. The Cougars answered back, however, with a pair of goals as Goodwin scored her second goal of the day and
Sam Beall-Dennell found the back of the net for the first time after assisting on a goal in the first quarter. The Gators then ended the third quarter on a 3-1 run, leaving the Cougars with an 8-5 lead heading into the final quarter. Donofrio scored the first goal of the fourth quarter for the Cougars and pushed their lead back to four. Despite the Gators ending a second straight quarter on a 3-1 run the Cougars held on for an important PAC victory 10-8.
The Cougars were led offensively by Hueber who had three goals and two assists. Beall-Dennell had one goal and two assists as Goodwin had two goals and one assists and Donofrio had three goals. All three ended the game with three total points.
Avery Redd led the Cougars with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Others with two caused turnovers were Beall-Dennell, Miller and
Syba Ismail.
Meghan Cuza-Berry spent the game in net for the Cougars making eight saves and ending the day with a 50% save rate. The Cougars completed 22 of 23 clear attempts.
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday April 12th for Senior Day as they host Geneva at 1 PM.
