LATROBE, Pa. - On Wednesday, the Cougars historic season added another chapter. Despite this being the men's lacrosse team's second 'home' playoff game, the Cougars have yet to host a playoff game at home in front of fans. Due to weather this game was moved to the home field of the opposing Saint Vincent Bearcats. The other was in the Spring of 2021 in an empty stadium. The Cougars had a rocky start but at the end they had won the first playoff game in program history by a final score of 10-7.
The Cougars immediately fell behind in the first quarter with the Bearcats going ahead 1-0. Despite tying the game at 1 the Cougars trailed after the first 15 minutes of play by a 4-1 score. The Cougars did not flinch however, scoring five goals in the second quarter, including the final four. The Cougars held a 6-5 lead after
Tanner Marsh scored his second goal of the game with 2.7 seconds left before halftime. In the third quarter, the Cougars added to their lead making it 7-5 before the Bearcats came back and tied it at the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter started with the teams tied at seven goals apiece and the Cougars took over from there. A trio of scores in the final quarter gave the Cougars a 10-7 win and their first postseason win in program history.
The Cougars were led by
Zen Smith who made 14 saves, his second highest total of the season, and saved 66.7% of shots on goal.
Ethan Rinker scored a team high three goals which led the team and
Jacob Lubawy and Marsh had matching two goal, two assist games.
Jesse Corser-James had a team high four ground balls and
Ethan Joshi caused four turnovers. The Cougars completed 21 of 25 clear attempts.
The Cougars have advanced and will take on Grove City in the PAC Championship on Saturday May 3rd. The game will be held in Grove City, Pa. and the time has yet to be determined.
