GROVE CITY, Pa. – Chatham Women's Basketball (14-5, 12-3) pulled off a fourth quarter comeback to defeat the Grove City Wolverines (11-9, 9-6) with a 64-59 overtime win at Grove City College Arena on Saturday.
Hannah Chenault led the game with 19 points, including five three-pointers, with five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Ashlie Louden scored 18 points, including a perfect 5-5 day from the foul line, with seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Both Chenault and Louden scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to help the Cougars erase a 12-point deficit and force overtime.
Charjae Brock netted 17 points on 7-16 shooting with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals, while
Alyssa Laukus led the team with nine rebounds to go along with four points.
The two teams started the game firing from deep, with back-to-back three-pointers by the Wolverines followed by back-to-back threes from Louden and Chenault starting the contest. Six of the first eight field goals of the game were from beyond the arc as the Cougars held a 13-7 lead seven minutes into the contest. Chatham then used two layups in the final minute of the quarter to lead 17-15.
Grove City began the second quarter with a 6-2 swing to take a two-point lead before another Louden three brought it back to Chatham. Another two-point Wolverine lead was taken over by a Brock layup and a Chenault three-pointer, which gave the Cougars a three-point advantage, the largest for either team in the second quarter. The two teams would go into the halftime break tied at 28.
Grove City took command of the game by starting the second half with an extended 10-0 run that included back-to-back treys. The Wolverines held the Cougars without a field goal in the third quarter, with Chatham's only points in the period coming from three free throws by Brock. The hosts extended their lead in the final minute of the third period, with a three-pointer with 30 seconds left and a putback layup at the buzzer.
Louden scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to bring the Cougars back within five points. Then, after a Grove City basket, Chenault connected on a three to cut it to 45-41 with 7:14 left. With under six minutes to play, Brock hit a reverse layup, which was followed by another triple from Louden that cut it to a one-point game. Chatham regained the lead with 4:29 left on a pair of free throws from Chenault. The Wolverines took the lead back before a three from Chenault, but Grove City tied it up again at 51 before a layup from Brock broke the tie. The two teams tied again three times down the stretch, ultimately ending regulation at 57 a piece.
The Wolverines netted the first basket of overtime, but the Cougars scored the final seven, including layups from Brock and Laukus and a pair of free throws from Louden.
Chatham shot just 27.3% (21-77) from the field, their lowest total of the season, while Grove City shot 39.1% (25-64) from the floor. However, the hosts committed 26 turnovers, and the Cougars won the rebound battle 50-47.
Chatham Women's Basketball will return to action at home on Wednesday when they play host to Franciscan.
