Pittsburgh, PA - On Friday, the Chatham Women's Hockey (1-8-0) took on SUNY Canton (6-3-0) in the opening game of their non-conference series. The Cougars fell to the Roos by a 3-1 margin.
In the first period, the teams traded early chances. The Cougars pressed, controlling much of the play early in the game. The Roos would draw first blood, going up 1-0 after a goal 16 minutes in the frame. They would double the lead moments later, following another even-strength goal that found the back of the net. In the last minute of the frame, the Roos scored again, taking a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
Early in the second period, the Cougars went to the power play. With the extra attacker, the Cougars sent everything on net, but we were unable to beat the goaltender. The Roos responded with a power play of their own, but the Cougars' defense was up to the task, keeping the deficit at 3-0.
The Cougars continued to battle as the game went into the third period of play. With six minutes to go, Chatham cut into the lead. Senior Chelsea Clark scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Liv McTavish and Abby Cunkelman. The game would finish 3-1.
Goaltender Morgan Miller found her footing as the game went on. She was perfect in the 2nd and 3rd periods, making 17 and 13 saves in each period, respectively, keeping the Cougars within striking distance. She finished the game with a .933 SV% %. Six different Cougars recorded a multi-block game, with defender Ella Stearns-Sheffer leading the way with 4.
