Men's Basketball Falls Just Short at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Chatham Men's Basketball (5-4, 1-1 PAC) went cold from the field in the final five minutes at John Carroll (8-2, 1-2 NCAC), dropping the contest 104-94.

Luke Chicone scored a game-high 36 points on 11-22 shooting and had 4 assists for the Blue Streaks. Kasey Hunt put up 29 points and shot 11-18 off the bench, and Kyle Irwin poured in 15 points on 5-11 from the field for John Carroll.

For the Cougars, Senior Diaun Pinkett netted 20 points to eclipse 1,000 in his career on 9-15 shooting, dished out a game-high 7 assists, pulled down 8 rebounds and recorded 3 steals. Senior Lovenson Xavier scored 16 points on 6-12 from the field and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to secure back-to-back double-doubles. Senior Easton Fulmer shot 4-9 from beyond the arc, tallying 18 points along with 4 assists. Senior Jake TenBerge scored 13 points on 6-10 shooting for Chatham.

The Blue Streaks controlled the game early, scoring 31 points in the opening 10 minutes to lead by 8. An ensuing 12-3 Cougar run with 5 Pinkett points gave Chatham a 35-34 advantage. John Carroll would score the next 4 points, then Pinkett made consecutive layups to put the Cougars up 45-40 with three minutes until the intermission. A Drew Vizenor triple and Xavier basket in the final minute helped Chatham hold a 5-point lead at halftime.

Zach Genther's three-point basket early in the second half gave the Cougars a 61-57 lead. The Blue Streaks responded with an 8-0 run in the next 30 seconds, but Chatham countered with 6 consecutive points from Fulmer across the next minute of play. The teams would continue to duke it out after that, with no team leading by more than 3 points until Fulmer's three-pointer with just over six minutes remaining gave the Cougars a 90-86 advantage. Xavier would put Chatham up 94-91 on a jumper and a couple of free throws with just over five minutes left. The Cougars could not find a point in the final minutes, however, and John Carroll closed out the game with a 13-0 scoring run.

Chatham's field goal percentage of 54.5 was its second-highest of the season. The Cougars shot 64.7 percent (22-34) in the first half. The Blue Streaks shot 46.7 percent (35-75) for the game, and their 40 percent three-point shooting was the second-highest Chatham has allowed so far in 2025-26.

The Cougars will wrap up their non-conference slate on Jan. 3 at Baldwin Wallace, with the tip scheduled for 3 p.m.
