Buffalo, NY - On Friday, Chatham women's hockey played the first game of their two-game set with Buffalo State, losing by a score of 7-2.
The teams traded chances early in the first frame. Buffalo State opened the scoring sixteen minutes into the period. Battling back, the Cougars evened the game 1-1 with 45 seconds left in the first, after an unassisted goal by sophomore Isabella Allsopp, her first of her career. Just 33 seconds later, the Bengals regained the lead, holding a slim 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Coming out of the break, Buffalo State added three more unanswered goals to extend its lead to 5-1. Chatham responded with a goal at 14:33 by junior Hailey Braaten, her first of the season. The goal was assisted by junior Morgan Black. Buffalo State tacked on an insurance goal late in the second period, bringing the score to 6-2.
In the third period, the game tightened up, with scoring chances stymied on both ends of the rink. The game would end 7-2 after another late-period goal by Buffalo State. Eight different Cougars registered a block, with Yana Samoulidis leading the team with two.
The Cougars will get another chance to beat the Bengals tomorrow, November 8. Game 2 of their weekend series is set to start at 3 pm.
