Pittsburgh, PA - On Saturday, the Cougars (1-7-0, 0-4-0) took on the Valiants (2-4-0, 2-2-0) in the second game of their conference series. Chatham fell by a score of 2-1 in a tough loss.
In the first period, the Valiants controlled much of the play out of the gate. The Cougars withstood the early barrage and responded with numerous close chances but were unable to find the back of the net. Twelve and a half minutes into the frame, Manhattanville broke the deadlock, scoring at even strength. Three minutes later, they would add another, extending their lead to 2-0. The Cougars battled back, trading grade A scoring chances. Leading the way in shots with 3 was Liv McTavish.
After trailing by two going into the second period, the Cougars made the necessary adjustments to get themselves back into the game. They kept their feet moving, finding chances where they could. The Cougars' relentless effort was rewarded as they cut the lead to 2-1 twelve minutes into the second. Ava England found the back of the net, scoring her first career goal, set up by Yana Samoulidis and Ella Stearns-Sheffer.
The third period was all Cougars. They came out ready to pounce and left it all on the line. Chatham controlled the faceoff dot throughout the period, which led to persistent chances and hemming the Valiants deep in their zone. The Cougars pulled their goalie with three and a half minutes left to play. They kept the pressure on and were firing pucks on goal. With moments left in the game, they had a couple of chances but could not score a goal.
Lily Schmear and Abby Cunkelman lead the Cougars with 3 blocks apiece. Brophy kept Chatham in the game and ended with a .929 SV%.
The Cougars will be off for Thanksgiving, celebrating with friends and family. Their next matchup is scheduled for Friday, December 5th, against SUNY Canton. Pittsburgh Ice Arena plays host to the non-conference competition at 4 pm.
