New Haven, CT - On Saturday, Chatham Women's Hockey faced off against Albertus Magnus in their second conference game of the season. The Cougars (1-5-0, 0-2-0) fell to the Falcons (4-0-0, 2-0-0) by a 3-2 final score.
The Cougars came out of the gates with a defensive mindset. The teams traded early chances, but goaltender Sam Brophy stood tall. She ended the frame with 14 saves, grounding the high-flying Falcons' offense. The Cougars mustered 7 shots on goal but were unable to solve the Falcons' goaltender.
In the second, the play was back-and-forth. Both teams stuck to their game plans, with their styles stopping any scoring chances for much of the frame. Halfway through the second, the Falcons broke through, scoring a power play goal to go up. Chatham battled back, controlling much of the attack the rest of the way; however, they entered the second intermission, trailing 1-0.
Four minutes into the third period, Albertus Magnus doubled their lead after scoring an even-strength goal. The Falcons added another goal at the 13:45 mark to extend their lead to 3-0. Down but not out, the Cougars responded. Junior Morgan Black scored her team-leading 2nd goal of the season to cut into the lead. Black's goal in back-to-back games was assisted by Liv McTavish and Chelsea Clark. Moments later, senior Anabel Lota scored her first goal of the season to bring the Cougars within one. The Cougars pressed late but ultimately fell 3-2.
Leading the way offensively was Liv McTavish, who assisted on both goals today. Seven different Cougars recorded blocks as they battled defensively.
Next up for the Cougars is a home conference series against Manhattanville, starting on Friday, November 21, with puck drop at 4 pm.
