Buffalo, NY - On Saturday, men's hockey beat St. John Fisher 3-2 to win the Buffalo State Bengals Classic.
The Cougars fell behind early after the Cardinals opened the scoring 1:17 into the game. They battled back and evened the score at 1-1 after junior Andrew Martino's first of the season, which was assisted by Bekk McClaine. Sophomore Tyler Samodral continued his hot start, scoring a goal in as many games to break the tie. His power play goal was assisted by Nic Cyprian and Caden Pendo.
Striking while the iron's hot, Samodral scored his second of the game 51 seconds into the second period, extending Chatham's lead to 3-1. The teams traded chances as the period progressed. After a costly penalty late in the frame, the Cardinals cut the Cougars' lead to 3-2, scoring a power play goal with less than a minute to play.
In the third period, the Cougars held onto their narrow lead despite persistent attack from the Cardinals. In tandem with the Cougar defense, junior goaltender Cameron Kuntar was perfect in the third period, stopping all 9 shots on goal he faced.
Samodral led the way for the Cougars, scoring in back-to-back games with 2 clutch goals tonight. Cyprian had himself another multiple-point game, assisting on two out of the three goals while also leading all Cougars in blocked shots. McClaine also added his first points of the season, and Jake LaRusso extended his point streak to open the season.
The Cougars will look to stay hot as they return home on November 7th, facing off against Fredonia. The home opener is set to start at 4 pm
