Buffalo, NY - On Friday, the Cougars opened their season on the road for the Buffalo State tournament. In game one of the tournament, Chatham handily beat Hiram by a final score of 10-1.
Two minutes into the game, junior Nicholas Babbie scored Chatham's first goal of the season, which helped to set the tone for today's matchup. The Cougars doubled the lead three minutes later after Caden Pendo netted his first of the season, assisted by Andrew Martino. Not to be outdone, senior True Crowe extended Chatham's lead to three after his goal seven and a half minutes into the opening frame. The Cougars went into the first intermission up 5-0, following sophomore Tyler Samodral's power-play goal and True Crowe's second goal of the game.
In the second period, the Cougars' ferocious attack did not let up. 11 seconds into the frame, senior Nick Cyprian got in on the action, scoring a power-play goal, with assists from True Crowe and Jake LaRusso. The aforementioned LaRusso tallied his first career goal as a Cougar just over four minutes later, set up by Ian Norkevicus and Camden Smith. Rounding out the second period, the Cougars extended their lead once again to 9-0 after two more goals from Charlie Smith and Michael Roby, respectively.
The third period was the lowest-scoring period of the night. Chatham added another one from Kyle Contessa to make it 10-1. Hiram added one late to cut the lead to 10-1, which went on to be the final score.
In total, 7 different Cougars had multi-point games today. LaRusso impressed in his Chatham debut, leading the way with 4 points coming from 1 goal and 3 assists. Crowe led all skaters in goals, with his 2 on the day. Babbie, Cyprian, and Roby all finished with 1 goal and 2 assists each.
The Cougars will look to build off their impressive first game. They will be competing in the tournament championship game tomorrow, facing off against the winner of the St. John Fisher and Buffalo State matchup. The championship game is scheduled for 7 pm.
