BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - The Cougars went 1-1 in their tri-match at Geneva after sweeping Hilbert (8-16, 4-5 AMCC) and losing in four to the Golden Tornadoes (17-15. 5-4 AMCC). These two matches were Chatham's last two road competitions.
On the day, freshman
Tim McCabe led the team with 22 kills, five aces and five blocks. First-year
Benjamin Shelestak recorded 21 kills, three aces and four blocks.
Freshman
Kyle Penn tallied seven kills and four aces between both matches. Senior
Coulter Chaffee assisted on 46 total Cougar points.
In match one, the Cougars hit .279 (their second most efficient day of the year) and held Hilbert to .080 hitting (the third-lowest mark of a Chatham opponent). Shelestak's match-high 13 kills mostly came in the final set, where he amassed six. After winning the first two sets by a combined 19 points, the Cougars trailed by four early into set three. There was a total of seven ties and six lead changes before Chatham pulled away on a 10-5 run to take the match.
Match two was more of a struggle for the Purple and Grey as the team hit .029 and had a total of 23 attacking errors and 10 reception errors. After dropping set one, the Cougars stole set two after trailing 10-15. They closed the set on a 15-6 run, which included three aces by McCabe. However, Geneva closed the match hitting an efficient .426 and giving up only 24 combined points to Chatham in the last two sets.
The Cougars' last game of the season is on Tuesday as the team celebrates senior night.
