LATROBE, Pa. - Chatham Women's Lacrosse (9-7, 6-3) wrapped up its regular season with a 20-5 win over the Saint Vincent Bearcats (2-12, 1-8) on Friday evening at UPMC Field.
Junior
Sam Beall-Dennell became the program's all-time leader in goals, breaking the previous record of 95 career goals which was held by Anna Prendergast. Â She is now Chatham's all-time leader in goal, points, caused turnovers, draw controls and ground balls in just her third season.
Seniors
Felicia Hutter and
Stephanie Walter each tallied seven points on the day to lead the offense, with five goals from Hutter and three from Walter. Beall-Dennell netted three goals and added three assists with three ground balls. Junior
Erin Goodwin recorded a hat trick as well. First year
Sarah Holt had a career-high three points on two goals and an assist, while graduate student
Bailey Donofrio put up the same stat line. Sophomore
Dani MacConnell and first year
Kaya Miller each tallied goals and Miller caused a turnover. Junior
Sam Barrett made six saves in the cage and picked up the win.
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Goodwin, then Beall-Dennell's record-breaking goal made it 2-0 just 12 seconds later. The Bearcats answered in the next minute to cut it to 2-1, but another goal from Goodwin increased Chatham's lead back to two. That lead became three at 4:15 of the first quarter when Beall-Dennell scored off a feed from Donofrio. Hutter tallied a free-position goal, then MacConnell found the net to give the Cougars a 6-1 lead. Saint Vincent scored with 20 seconds left in the opening quarter to make it 6-2.
Donofrio scored the first goal of the second quarter just 28 seconds in to give Chatham a five-goal advantage, then Goodwin scored on a free-position shot to make 8-2. The Cougars did not stop there, scoring five more goals in the next eight minutes, with three from Hutter. Holt and Donofrio both scored goals assisted by Walter to give Chatham a 15-2 lead heading into the halftime break.
Beall-Dennell opened the second half with her third goal of the day, then Hutter and Miller scored while the Cougars shut out the Bearcats in the third quarter. In the fourth, Walter tallied another goal, then Saint Vincent found the net for the first time of the second half at 10:29. The Bearcats would score again to make it 19-4 before Walter's second goal of the period gave the Cougars an even 20 on the day.
Shots were 36-13 in favor of Chatham, and the Cougars controlled 20 of the 28 draws. Saint Vincent was 3-6 on free-position shots, while Chatham was 2-5.
Chatham Women's Lacrosse has clinched the four seed in the PAC Tournament and will host the fifth-seeded Thiel Tomcats at UPMC Graham Field on Tuesday.
